Jay Wilson, the Diablo 3 Game Director and author of the now infamous “F’ that loser” comment about one of the creators of Diablo, David Brevik, has evidently never even met Mr. Brevik. Oh and Marvel Heroes, the top-down superhero MMOARPG Brevik is working on? It’s now being billed as the spiritual successor to Diablo 2. Let it not be said that Gazillion Entertainment doesn’t pounce on marketing opportunities.
I was a bit surprised yesterday that some normally outspoken game developers didn’t dive into the Diablo fray when Wilson’s remark took the tubes by storm. But the folks at Eurogamer picked up a couple of interesting bits of reaction. Leo Olebe, the VP of Marketing at Brevik’s new studio, Gazillion, had this to say:
“We admire Blizzard and Blizzard games,” Olebe told Eurogamer. “David was asked about Diablo 3 and gave his honest opinion and we stand by him 100 percent. Marvel Heroes is David’s vision and is the spiritual successor to Diablo 2. We’ll be in closed beta soon, so visit MarvelHeroes.com if you want to check it out.”
The spiritual successor to Diablo 2. That’s a loaded comment if I’ve ever heard one. Remind me to hire Mr. Olebe the next time I need to sell something. But really not pulling any punches was Mark Kern, the former Blizzard developer who worked with Brevik on Diablo 2 before going on to become a team lead on World of Warcraft. Kern, now the CEO of Red 5 and working on sci-fi shooter MMO Firefall, posted these comments on his Twitter account:
“Gotta say, that Jay Wilson, never having been at Blizzard for D1 and D2 and never having met Dave Brevik, has no place to say what he did.”
“Dave Brevik created 2 genre-busting, award winning, world-loved Diablo games. Jay Wilson has done ____ with Diablo 3. Fill in the blanks.”
“Blizzard arrogance has reached new heights.”
For their part, Blizzard and Wilson have yet to comment. We’ll let you know if and when they do.
